Georgia College student named 2018 Newman Civic Fellow

2018 Mar 8

Junior Julia Steele has been named a 2018 Newman Civic Fellow. Steele, an environmental science major and public health minor, was selected by campus administration for the fellowship, and is one of the 268 students who will make up the organization's 2018 cohort.

"I'm so excited and honored to be name an Newman Civic Fellow," she said. "I've never received an award like this for my work, and I'm especially glad to see my biggest project Campus Kitchen recognized."

The Campus Kitchen Project teams dining services with student leaders to keep food from going to waste and turns it into meals for people struggling with food insecurities. Students are planning to launch the initiative later this spring.

The Newman Civic Fellowship is a one-year experience emphasizing personal, professional and civic growth. Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides a variety of learning and networking opportunities, including a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate.

"Julia was selected because of her excellent work with Campus Kitchen as well as her work with the campus sustainability fee," said National Scholarship Coordinator Anna Whiteside. "She did a great job in identifying needs in the community and the campus, and finding ways one could help the other."

Through the fellowship, Steele will be mentored by Kristen Hitchcock, sustainability coordinator at Georgia College, and is invited to the national conference that will be held in Boston in November.

"I'm looking forward to networking with other student leaders across the country that really want to make a difference in their community and beyond," she said.

Campus Compact is a Boston-based nonprofit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education. The Newman Civic Fellowship is supported by the KPMG Foundation and Newman's Own Foundation.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate and engage with such an extraordinary group of students," said Campus Compact president Andrew Seligsohn. "The stories of this year's Newman Civic Fellows make clear that they are bringing people together in their communities to solve pressing problems. That is what Campus Compact is about, and it's what our country and our world desperately need."
