Janileyah Thompson named Fulbright semi-finalist for the 2018-2019 academic year

2018 Mar 5

A current Georgia College student and two recent graduates were named 2018-2019 semi-finalists for Fulbright Scholarships.

Senior geography and history major Darcie Scales applied for an English Teaching Assistantship in Hungary. She will serve as an English teaching assistant in the eastern European country for nine months, if selected.

December 2017 graduate Janileyah Thompson also applied for an English Teaching Assistantship. If selected, the mass communication major would spend 13 months working as an English teaching assistant in South Korea.

Sofia Papa, a 2016 graduate who majored in Spanish, applied for an English Teaching Assistantship in Spain. She currently serves as a Teach for America member in Jacksonville, Florida.

All three semi-finalists participated in study abroad during their time at Georgia College. Both Papa and Scales were members of the Honors Program.

"This is a great achievement for Georgia College, and it is one that we can certainly celebrate," said Anna Whiteside, assistant director, Honors Program and coordinator of the National Scholarships Office. "These three semi-finalists are Fulbright candidates who have been selected by the Fulbright National Screening Committee to move on to the next level."

About half of the semi-finalists are selected as Fulbright finalists. Finalist notifications will be sent out from host countries later this spring.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers teaching, research and study opportunities in more than 140 countries. More than 360,000 Fulbrighters have participated in the program since 1946.
